The Bradford-based creative design and engineering business created the ‘Rebel Cruiser’ - so-called due to trademark reasons - in tribute to the film franchise’s iconic spaceship for last Sunday’s (30 October) event at Doncaster Racecourse.
While the film set used individual models of the interior and exterior, Ultra Con commissioned XKX Projects to build a replica spaceship combining both for what it says is the first time.
Dino Parrinello, founder and owner of XKX Projects, which manufactures and builds permanent and temporary installations out of a 13,5000 sq ft workshop, said: "Being asked to create a tribute spaceship for Ultra Con was a challenge that we were keen to undertake. Working from movie images we have collaborated with the Ultra Con team and together we have custom built a detailed replica space craft experience to thrill film fans attending the show."
The cockpit of the event centrepiece was 13 feet tall and more than 42 feet long. The structure was made from plywood and MDF, supported by steel tube legs.
More than a thousand brightly coloured LED lights, switches, components and detailed panels completed the science fiction fantasy.
