Warning after bad-weather cancellations

Organisers are being warned to make sure that they have weather-related insurance following recent storms and the cancellation of New Year's Eve celebrations in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool and Newcastle.

Chubb Insurance issued the warning after Glasgow's Hogmanay party, which attracts 25,000 people, was called off for the first time in 20 years as barriers, staging and portable toilets were blown over by gusts of up to 70 miles per hour.

Glasgow City Council lost hundreds of thousands of pounds, as it had no insurance for weather-related cancellation. It also had to issue £250,000 worth of ticket refunds.

Chubb Insurance senior underwriter Alan Norris said: "Weather-related insurance cover can cost just a fraction of the amount that organisers will now have to pay out to disappointed revellers."
