According to research by the train operator, almost 39 million Brits haven’t laughed out loud in the last week, while three million admitted they've gone over six months without a chuckle.

To tackle the problem, Virgin Trains has called on the cream of stand-up comedians to stage a one-off Comedy Coach on a newly refurbished King’s Cross to Edinburgh service.

The coach will be hosted by comedian Nick Page and feature performances from Edinburgh Festival favourites Kane Brown, Katie Mulgrew, Ray Bradshaw and Jo Caulfield.

The brand is offering 15 pairs of tickets to be won via social media. Comedy fans need to follow @Virgin_TrainsEC and retweet the competition post to be entered into the prize draw. Successful applicants will be contacted via social media from Wednesday 3 August.

The Virgin Trains Comedy Coach will leave King’s Cross at 9.30am on Tuesday 9 August and arrive at Edinburgh Waverley at 2.13pm in time for passengers to explore this year's Edinburgh Festival, which runs from 5-29 August.

David Horne, managing director, Virgin Trains on the east coast, commented: "At Virgin Trains, we’re all about customer experience and we are delighted to be bringing onboard a flavour of comedy from along our east coast route.

"Whether our customers are travelling with us to see the Fringe Festival, or making a social or business visit, they can be sure of a barrel of laughs in our Comedy Coach as they are whisked to Edinburgh in speed and style on one of our newly refurbished trains.

"We’ve just passed the halfway point in our train refurbishment programme on the east coast, and the Comedy Coach is a great way to showcase to our customers the transformations we are already bringing to their journeys."

In February, Virgin Trains offered singles a unique on-board speed dating experience to coincide with Valentine's Day.

At the start of the year, sister brand Virgin Holidays unveiled a giant South African-style luxury treehouse on the South Bank.
