Whitehorn has been at Virgin for 25 years and has experience in the event industry, including being involved in the early development of the V Festival.
"The SECC is entering an exciting stage in its business life," said Whitehorn. "Its investment and growth plans, including the world class Scottish National Arena, have positioned it strategically to capitalise on a significant period for both Glasgow and Scotland’s event market. We’ve a great opportunity now to position the business as a centre of event excellence and a world class and globally recognised leisure and business brand."
The SECC is planning a Scottish National Arena (pictured) to open in Glasgow in 2013.
Whitehorn is also a member of the First Minister of Scotland’s "GlobalScot" business mentoring network and non-executive chairman of PR firms Next Fifteen Communications and Loewy Group.
"He has outstanding international networks within the private and government sectors that can add genuine value to the business," said SECC CEO John Sharkey.
