Uber sent a fleet of its cars out onto the streets of 20 European countries to collect peoples’ donations to the refugee crisis from 12-8pm on Wednesday (September 9).

Demand was so high that the company could not fulfil all requests, and as such opted to extend the initiative another day.

Between the pick-up hours those wishing to donate could open their Uber app and swipe the slider to ‘giving’ to request a car free of charge. Within minutes a car approached their location to collect the donated items, which were then delivered to a dedicated local charity.

In London the goods were donated to Save the Children, and they will be sold in the charity's shops throughout the country. All proceeds from the sale of the items will be channelled towards helping children affected by the refugee crisis.

Uber accepted goods that can be sold by Save the Children shops, including clothes, books, toys and homewares.

In Dublin, items, which ranged from from tents, clothes, blankets and wellies to waterproof gear, shoes and personal hygiene items, were delivered to the Dublin Calais Refugee Solidarity.

Members of the public could follow the initiative on Twitter via the hashtage #UberGiving.

Uber brought the intiative to London and Manchester last December to collect Christmas donations, which were dropped off to charities including Fare Share and Whitechapel Mission.
