The Freight Transport Association contacted its members last month to tell them about alternative routes to Switzerland following the blaze in the St Gotthard tunnel. The 10-mile tunnel forms part of a major north-south route on the Continent and officials are unable to confirm how long the route will remain closed. David Steinberg, managing director at logistics firm Stardes said: “Freight companies travelling to Switzerland should expect a lot of delays. There are alternative routes but these are fast diminishing. ” TNT key account manager Paul Strachan said his company had been unaffected so far as it doesn’t have any freight in transit in that area. “If we do get jobs for that region we will alter timescales and perhaps add a day,” he said. “Also, we will speak to companies in that area and find out how the other routes are holding up.”
