Star backs amateur football celebration

A two-day event to promote football at an amateur level has won the backing of Sir Trevor Brooking, the Football Association's (FA) director of football development.

The Grass Roots Football Show, organised by VCM Events, will take place at Excel from 16-17 July. Aimed at volunteer managers, coaches, officials and administrators, it will feature a 2,000-seat coaching arena, an FA learning theatre and seminars hosted by FA officials. An exhibition alongside it will give club officials a chance to source products and services such as floodlights, goalposts, medical kits and equipment.

A five-strong panel of personalities, including England Ladies captain Faye White and World Cup referee Phil Sharp, joined Sir Trevor at the launch, held at The Valley, home of Premiership team Charlton Athletic.

He said: "I am amazed there has never been this kind of event before and with tickets limited to 7,000 each day, the show will surely be a sell-out."

Event director Bob Rosen promised "a fantastic mix of coaching clinics, workshops and masterclasses to an anticipated audience of over 10,000".

He added: "We are delighted with the support and assistance we have received from organisations such as the FA."
