Based on a photo seen by Bon Jovi, the Stageco teamed was briefed to create a structure inspired by a classic 1959 Buick Electra 225 for the tour, which was seen at Cardiff City Stadium yesterday. The 60m wide structure was designed by Doug ‘Spike’ Brant, who wanted to move away from the large-scale video design that is currently popular on tours.
As well as a stage that includes 250,000 tonnes of production equipment and a 165-tonne working platform hanging above the stage, an eight metre cantilever - a beam that is anchored only at one end - was created to fly the sound system either side of the stage to keep sightlines clear for the audience.
It is one of five identical stages created by Stageco for the entire European tour.
Project manager Bert Kustermans oversaw the planning of the five bespoke stages. He said: "Working with the whole Bon Jovi team is at the pinnacle of the live touring sector.
"Everyone is focused on delivering a show that will have that special ‘wow factor’ for the fans, and it’s stimulating to be part of that process to come up with something new that works at an international level."
