Sipsmith to pop up with historic gin experience

Artisan gin brand Sipsmith has partnered with London's Ham Yard Hotel to host a gin pop-up inspired by the drinks of yesteryear.

The ingeniously named Swan on a Hot Gin Roof will be located on the Soho building’s hidden terrace, which provides guests with a rooftop view of London.

Opening on 26 January and running until 14 February, the brand will provide woollen blankets to keep visitors warm as they sample the historically inspired drinks menu.

Sipsmith’s master distiller Jared Brown has teamed up Ham Yard Hotel’s bar manager Eoin Kenny to reproduce drinks created in the 16th century right through to the 1920s.

Warm serves will include The Smoking Bishop, supposedly a Victorian favourite of Charles Dickens, gin and gingerbread pairing The Original, and the Soho Gin Broth – a 1664 recipe that includes Barthlemas beef.

Devised by the brand alongside Story PR, the ticketed event will host guests in timed slots. Entry includes a complimentary welcome drink and an introduction from the Sipsmith team.

Brown said: "Sipsmith is a real celebration of where the old meets the new, with the spirit of London’s gin heritage at its core, so just as I did for our original London Dry gin recipe, I’ve been delving into the history books for inspiration is where it all began.

"We can see these becoming classics of the future, and where better to showcase them than at the iconic Ham Yard Hotel."

Kenny added: "Sipsmith London Dry Gin is a popular serve at the bar already, so it’s been great working with Jared to explore all these flavour profiles and reimagine historical drinks recipes with the gin – we’re really proud of the results."

Sipsmith created another pop-up - inspired by the skiing season - back in November.
