Pegler left VNU at the beginning of this month and will be reviewing a number of approaches from interested parties.
He founded the exhibition organiser Imark seven years ago, later managing the company's integration into VNU following the acquisition of Imark in 2002.
"The VNU business is in good shape with great management so it just seemed the right time to go. Although there is nothing definite as yet, there are a couple of options and I'm taking my time to review them but I will be staying in the event business," said Pegler.
At present a replacement for Pegler is not being sought, with the existing UK management team reporting directly to Dick Molman, managing director of VNU Exhibitions Europe.
Molman said: "Throughout his career, David has consistently demonstrated his strong commercial leadership and commitment to the task in hand. He has an excellent track record, strong management and communications skills and is always determined to achieve the best possible results for this team and the company."
The international group organises events in the UK, Italy and the Netherlands with another office in Asia.
In the UK, VNU Exhibitions is responsible for 15 specialist IT and information events including the Softworld and British Performance and Project Management portfolios, IT and Telecoms division and Information portfolio.
