Notting Hill Carnival scotches cancellation rumours

The organiser of the Notting Hill Carnival (NHCL) has hit back at Kensington and Chelsea Council over claims the event could be axed because of public safety issues.

Last week, Event reported how the council accused NHCL of failing to run the 2008 event properly by not meeting basic event management standards.

But according to carnival director Michael Williams, these issues are partly down to a lack of funding.

"To give you an example, the carnival attracts more than 1.5million people a year but we only receive funding for 120-150 stewards, that's one steward per 10,000 people," he explained.

It is a similar story for the NHCL's own team. "We can only afford to employ two or three full-time members of staff all year round," said Williams.

"The contributions made by our partners are substantial and appreciated but the funding is not in tune with the size of the event.

"By working with our partners we're quite confident we can resolve this problem, but rest assured the carnival is here to stay."
