No support for NEC sale plan

Opposition is mounting against Birmingham Venue Management’s £600m bid to take over the NEC (Marketing Event, October). Last month, David Roy, leader of Birmingham City Council’s Conservative group, backed the Labour-controlled authority’s decision not to sell. The consortium, led by former Excel commercial director Keith Greetham, has so far failed to convince the council of the benefits of selling the venue. Birmingham City Council runs the NEC Group at a loss and Greetham argues that privatisation is essential to ensure the continued success of the venue, given the current economic climate. He has also suggested a deal could be made that would see the council retain control of the group. However, the council remains adamant that the venue is not for sale.
