NFL UK kicks off Super Bowl celebrations with Shard stunt

NFL UK transformed iconic London building The Shard into the Vince Lombardi trophy last night (1 February) to kick off Super Bowl week.

The forced perspective illusion projection stunt saw an American football surround the very top of The Shard, which was illuminated.

The number 50 then appeared, at which point a countdown to one commenced, and fifty years of NFL highlights were played to the sound of Coldplay’s Viva La Vida.

To celebrate 50 years of the Super Bowl, NFL UK is giving away 50 prizes from today (2 February) until Sunday (7 February), such as a year's supply of burgers, signed memorabilia, and a trip for the NFL Network studios in LA.

Alistair Kirkwood, managing director of NFL UK said: "This is by far the largest competition we’ve ever run here and celebrates just how important the UK has become to the NFL.

"The International Series games in London attract sell-out crowds and we have more than three million avid fans here in UK, a figure that is growing every year. This competition is a great chance for everyone in Britain to get involved in the world’s biggest sporting event."

The game, which will see the Carolina Panthers play the Denver Broncos, will kick off at 11:30pm local time on Sunday (7 February).

Agency Really Creative Media filmed the stunt and handled all post production.

The NFL is set to return to the UK this year, and there are plans to host games at Twickenham Stadium over a period of three years from October.
