Visit London has won a year-long bid to stage the annual Indian Travel Congress in the capital.

The event, organised by the Travel Agents Association of India, will take place from 26-29 September at Lord’s. It will be the first time that the congress has been held outside Asia throughout its 60-year history. Visit London chief executive James Bidwell said: “London’s ‘India Now’ season last year celebrated the contribution made by our Indian community here in London, and looked forward to even closer ties with India itself. With Delhi hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2010 and London hosting the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, this is a golden opportunity to capitalise on the historic and present-day ties between us.” The Travel Agents Association of India represents more than 2,500 Indian travel agents and other tourism representatives. Visit London forecasts that spend by Indian visitors will increase by more than 50% to £229m between now and 2012.
