Kristy Baptista, director of sales and marketing at Bateaux London, on teddy bears picnics, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Pageant and travelling the globe.

I got into the event industry because I enjoy planning, entertaining and food presentation. I have been fortunate to design, plan and create experiences and events that have lasting memories and generate conversations with family, colleagues and friends.

I have worked here since July 2004, starting my London career at Bateaux London as reservations supervisor.

I was attracted to this particular role because I love being on the water and I was immediately drawn to the amazing sights along the Embankment when I first visited London. I have some photos I took many years ago as a tourist in which I captured one of our boats, the Symphony.

Not many people know that I have been planning events since the age of 12. Back home in Australia I organised fetes, school discos, cake stalls and even a teddy bears picnic for the families in the local area.

If there’s one thing I’ve learnt it’s never to be complacent. In the events industry you need to continue to enhance your customer journey from start to finish and to be pro-active with client relationships.

The best event I’ve been involved in was the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Pageant on the 3 June. The Symphony was the final vessel in the pageant hosting the London Philharmonic Orchestra. It was truly a proud moment for Britain and the team at Bateaux London. To be on board to witness such a once in a lifetime event was incredible.

If I could do it all over again I would do it exactly the same. I believe that opportunities present themselves to make you stronger, however, it is how you as an individual choose to grow from challenges that are presented to you that counts.

The one thing I can’t stand is lack of attention to detail. Taking every aspect into consideration when designing an event will assist with the success of the overall look and feel. It is critical that attention to detail is set out from the beginning in order to manage and meet expectations.

Outside of work I spend my time with my husband. We both love to travel, to try new cuisines, meet new people and explore new cultures.

If money were no object I would expand the Bateaux brand worldwide and continue to widen my personal experiences by travelling the globe, seeing how other cultures live.

The one thing I can’t do my job without is my dedicated team who inspire their clients and their colleagues every day.
