The Crystal Palace Tower has broadcast for more than 50 years and is the most important transmitter of the 1150 masts in the UK broadcast network.

The lighting up of the tower was the finale to a VIP event which saw appearances from British broadcasting personalities such as Sir David Attenborough, Professor Brian Cox and Chris Evans.

More than 200,000 watts of energy-efficient lighting was used to illuminate the 219-metre structure - the same wattage used to light the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

The display was visible across London and climaxed when a beam of light shot up the tower and radiated over the city.
