User-friendly, flexible apps for collecting visitor data and audience feedback were showcased at an interactive breakfast briefing held recently at BAFTA HQ – 195 Piccadilly.

The briefing, presented by audience engagement specialists, Crystal Interactive, showed how web and smartphone technologies are enabling organisers and exhibitors to access and manage information for exhibitions, conferences and other events.   Bump technology is allowing smartphones to share data by touch, while trade show visitors and conference delegates are using apps to broadcast their presence and find other attendees.

Coming soon ...

Crystal Interactive MD Chris Elmitt predicts that very soon

  • Tablets such as iPads will be universally-used for information share and retrieval
  • Employers will supply mobile devices for home/work use just like a company car – and BYOD (bring your own device) will be the norm at events
  • Pretty much anything an event organiser could conceive of using technology for will be available on an iPad.

Organisations no longer need to invest in bespoke event management systems that rigidly perform  specific functions.  Now technology is being developed that is sensitive to the way we use information, and are being designed to create communities and meet a vast range of user needs.

But it’s a rapidly changing picture – with increased choice, capability and speed of delivery.  The challenge lies in keeping track of new developments.  How can you access and use the latest technologies to maximise audience interaction, streamline data collection and provide real-time audience feedback?

Smart use of interactivity

Crystal Interactive recently worked with a client to digitise the content of their exhibition stands, making it accessible for visitors via iPad.  The brief was to increase the volume and quality of leads captured on-stand, while projecting a modern and professional image for the company.  Crystal designed a solution that enabled visitors to browse reports on a specially-designed website and request these via an electronic order form.  Crystal assisted the client by:

  • Installing content (updatable in real-time) such as research reports, presentations and online demos via a branded interface on the iPad.
  • Engaging visitor interest in receiving research reports (which would be emailed to them within 30 minutes).
  • Capturing leads and uploading them straight onto the client’s CRM system.

On each occasion, the client outperformed targets for leads captured and quality of follow-up information. Over 50% of the audience at one event requested reports to be sent to them.
