New £12m event space at Old Trafford

Trafford Borough Council has approved a planning application for the first phase of an extensive £200m development programme, which will see a new event and banqueting facility added to Lancashire County Cricket Club (LCCC).

The first stage of the development is set to cost £12m and will result in a venue capable of hosting up to 1,000 guests, attracting major events and business to the area.

"This new facility will simply be the best of its kind," said LCCC commercial director Geoff Durbin. "Manchester has been crying out for a 1,000-plus capacity event space for many years, so it is good news for us, Trafford and the wider region."

Designed by architect BDP, the new suite will be a self-contained event space overlooking the cricket pitch.

Work will commence next month and is due for completion in summer 2010.

To ensure continuity for its clients during the development, LCCC has erected a solid-wall marquee within the grounds that can cater for up to 700 guests.

When complete, the £200m development programme will include new business, residential and leisure space in the vicinity and is promised to bring a plethora of economic, sporting and educational benefits to the North West.
