Meet your budget

Add the "wow" factor to your event with some table-top tips from EventWise managing director Penny Ellis

The key to a successful party is planning and attention to detail. An imaginative and creative use of your budget can mean the difference between a truly memorable event and one that fades into the distance.

What better way to give your event that "wow" factor than with a great table decoration? Whether you opt for simple elegance, sheer extravagance, themed or wacky creations, there is something for every party.

Posies of carnations arranged in oasis are long gone; simple yet effective use of materials such as mirrors, feathers, candles and lights can be striking and unusual.

Table decorations need to be practical and effective, so check that you can still hold a conversation with other guests at the table once you are seated.

A good budget-saving tip is to vary the style, size and height of your arrangements. By having two or three designs - one simple and the others more elaborate - you can create impact. Or why not try helium balloons tied together? With flair and imagination this can be an excellent way to dress a room.

For special events that have a healthy budget ice sculptures, chocolate fountains or elaborate candelabra can have high impact. Also think about how your table decorations will be lit. If your budget will stretch to pin spotlighting tables or coloured uplighters, this will transform the overall ambience.

Alternatively,a scattering of night lights and table confetti will give you a special effect at a relatively low cost.

Tap into the senses. Think how the colours combine; if there is a theme, does it capture your imagination? A party should be a sensory extravaganza, and by giving table decorations careful thought you can achieve something spectacular and unique - you just need creativity and imagination.
