The world's largest country by area likes to keep a high profile at international events, especially given its recent bids to attract them – Sochi in south-west Russia will host the 2014 Winter Olympics and the country is favourite to beat England to the 2018 football World Cup.

Westminster Council could not confirm the deal has been done, but Event can reveal that Russia has been in negotiations about taking over the site.

Fan houses are expected to form an integral part in building a great atmosphere at the London 2012 Olympics.

Already Old Billingsgate has inked a deal with France, Somerset House with Brazil, and, as revealed first in Event online, Alexandra Palace is expected to host the ever-popular Holland House.

Further rumours include the possibility of the Germany National Olympic Committee (NOC) contingent holding its fan house on a huge vessel on the Thames.
