London plans beach venue

Plans to build a beach venue along the south bank of the Thames have been submitted to Lambeth council by agency South Bank Beach.

The proposals, which mirror the temporary beach built in Paris each summer, include a seven-metre high cinema screen surrounded by tiered seating for up to 800 people. Beach volleyball, evening barbecues, children's activities and yoga sessions have also been suggested for the area opposite the London Eye.

The plans have received backing from the South Bank Centre and the British Film Institute, suggesting that it might open from July to September to coincide with the 18-month closure of the Royal Festival Hall for renovation.

A South Bank Beach spokeswoman said that the beach area could be used for corporate hire.
