The international standard - ISO20121 - was developed after Locog established the British Standard BS8901 to help make the 2012 Games the most sustainable Olympics to date.

The standard sets out a framework for achieving environmental, financial and social sustainability in events by reducing costs, carbon emissions and waste, managing the biodiversity of venues, and creating business legacies.

At yesterday’s launch, David Stubbs, head of sustainability at Locog, said London 2012 will have "raised the bar" for demonstrating what can be achieved with sustainability.

"We developed the British Standard because we saw that there was a gap in the market, and nothing really pulling events together in a sustainable way," he said.

Howard Kerr, chief executive of BSI, added: "Over the next few years as sustainability becomes an inherent factor in all businesses, this standard will provide the event industry with an opportunity to lead."

Also speaking at the launch was Olivia Knight-Adams, sustainable games project coordinator for Coca-Cola. She said it would be inspiring to see a British Standard being taken on across the globe. "As soon as we heard about the standard we instantly knew it was something we had to do and that would benefit us in the future. It has helped us to inspire change, consider our priorities and invest in our future."

Experts from 30 countries helped to develop the standard.
