Ruth Mackensie is currently an adviser on broadcasting and cultural policy for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Her previous roles include first general director of the Manchester International Festival, artistic director of Chichester Festival Theatre, and general director at the Scottish Opera.

"This is the final piece in the jigsaw of a project that now has the best possible level of governance in the Cultural Olympiad Board," said Locog chairman Sebastian Coe. "[We also have] a strong team here at Locog, significant funding in place through the Olympic Lottery Distributor and further partners, and projects being developed in conjunction with key partners across the arts and culture sector."

Mackensie will be supported by a team of artistic advisers: Martin Duncan, Craig Hassall, Sir Brian McMaster and Alex Poots.

Some commentators had expressed concern about the time it took to appoint a Cultural Olympiad director - the post was expected to be filled before Christmas.
