Key issues aired at UFI Open Summer Seminar

The growth of the exhibition industry in India, venue security and statistic auditing were three of the key topics discussed at the 2005 UFI Open Summer Seminar last month.

Almost 250 exhibition professionals from 45 countries attended the global exhibition trade body's networking event at Villa Erba in Lake Como, Italy from 13-15 June.

UK speakers included Answers Training International managing director Simon Naudi, who presented with senior consultant Brian Wiseman on how to launch new shows.

Naudi said: "Key issues were to work in partnership with venues and contractors, not to sign financial agreements until you have done the research, and to become the industry guru in your launch industry or market."

He added that poor audio-visual let the event down, with many speakers suffering feedback that "sounded like you were in an echo chamber". Overall, however, delegates reacted positively, a key highlight being a speed-dating session to help boost networking opportunities.

Other speakers included the Montgomery Exhibitions chairman and former UFI chairman Sandy Angus, and Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre (SECC) chief executive Michael Closier.

Delegates also visited the city of Como, took a boat trip to the villa and were able to network while water skiing, sailing and playing golf.
