A previous political secretary to Margaret Thatcher, Whittingdale has been chair of the Culture Select Committee since 2005. He was appointed as the shadow culture secretary from 2002-2003 and again from 2005-2006.
Speaking of his time in opposition to parliamentary magazine House, Whittingdale said: "Select committee chairmen are able to influence policy now. If your party is in opposition, I think it's the best job you can do, and being chairman of the culture, media and sport committee is certainly the job I have most enjoyed."
Whittingdale added that he has attended "some fantastic events" through his role as culture chair.
Javid set out a new events strategy towards the end of his tenure as culture secretary, which will now be put in place following the Conservatives' win in last Thursday's (7 May) General Election. The vote ousted the chairman of the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Events, Nick de Bois, from his seat in Enfield North.
