Inspiration for this event actually came from my love of rainbows, and a Tony Blair quote that implied people's visions are painted with the colours of the rainbow. Fortunately, the law firm's office, complete with 70ft atriums and a roof terrace, lent itself perfectly to the creation of seven interactive academies that each took a colour of the rainbow.
It meant the event had huge open-plan glass areas dressed and filled with rainbow-themed balloon sculptures, fabric and ribbons, setting the stage for continuous performance. The whole building was lifted by live music from three stages, infused with a carnival spirit. Artists, circus performers, ice skaters, dancers and carnival acts entertained and provided workshops for the guests.
The Art Academy space was a frenzy of creativity with teddy bear-making, rainbow pictures, wax hands and jewellery just a few of the craft ideas on offer, as the staff dining area was transformed into a busy art factory for all the family. Graduates and students from London art schools inspired guests.
Another area was the Carnival Academy, which was the event's focal point. Performers from the Notting Hill Carnival brought their sculptural costumes from the streets into the glass walkways and office spaces. They danced throughout the party and provided workshops on carnival costume and make-up.
In Fame Academy, guests enjoyed High School Musical and Grease workshops, where they learnt how to sing and dance, while in the Circus Academy performers provided everyone with an aerial spectacular.
The Film Academy section used the latest green-screen technology, with Dance Heads enabling everyone to make their own music video, while the star-imaging section of the Glam Academy allowed guests to have their photo taken as a superstar, having been made up by professional make-up artists. For something a little more exciting, the Sports Academy had sports simulators, including the Nintendo Wii. On a sporting theme, the final surprise was an Ice Academy where former England rugby player Kyran Bracken showcased his Dancing on Ice routine in a rainbow costume.
Finishing touches, such as rainbow-coloured graduation stickers for guests who completed each area, made everyone more enthusiastic to complete the activities.
As a finishing touch we utilised the roof terrace with a Big Band and rainbow marquee, which added to the family atmosphere at the party.
