Recession-hit East London venue Hackney Empire is set to cut all performances for nine months in a "period of reflection".

However, the venue will be open for events. As reported last year, the "dark period" could usher opportunities for event organisers hoping to use the venue.

In spite of the suspension of its theatre programme for nine months the venue is definitely not going to shut down according to its chief executive, Claire Middleton.

The Arts Council told Event that the board that runs the recession-hit east London venue decided to review its business strategy for the space, which has lost money year-on-year.

The organisation also confirmed that that there will be redundancies to help streamline the business. However, all educational and youth work will continue at the venue.
