Heappey’s constituency includes the town of Glastonbury, famed for hosting Michael Eavis’ five-day music festival. He first came to parliament in May, and previously served in the army as a major.

The Conservative MP will take on the chairman position left open by Nick de Bois, who lost his seat of Enfield North in the General Election. The former MP was previously managing director of exhibitions and events agency Rapiergroup – formerly Rapier Design - before first entering the Houses of Parliament in 2010.

The announcement was made last night (19 October) at a Britain for Events industry reception held at London event centre The Mermaid.

Michael Hirst, chair of the Business Visits & Events Partnership, introduced Heappey to the room of event profs following a speech on the buoyancy of the UK industry.

Hirst added that the remainder of the APPG board should be announced by the end of the year.
