Research has shown that car accidents are the leading cause of death amongst young people, with young people in Europe being twice as likely to be killed on roads compared to the average person.

Ford has teamed up with road safety organisations such as Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA), Brake and AA Drive Tech and will deliver a training programme to help drivers between the ages of 18 and 24 to gain crucial experience behind the wheel in a safe environment.

The training session will cover hazard recognition, vehicle handling, speed/space management, distraction and cyclist awareness, dangers of drink and drug driving and dangers of taking ‘Selfies’ at the wheel - after a survey commissioned by Ford in 2014 showed that 1 in 4 young drivers had taken a "selfie" at the wheel.

Ford has also identified that university students will often use their mobile phones at the wheel, as well as breaking the speed limit and drink driving.

Research conducted on 6,500 young Europeans in June of this year showed that 43 per cent send texts, 38 per cent swipe through apps, 36 per cent take calls, 60 per cent speed and 13 per cent drink drive.

Andy Barrat, Ford's chairman and managing director, will be in attendance on 18 November, as well as IAM RoadSmart CEO Sarah Sillers, and the charity's young ambassador Eloise Peabody-Rolf.

Harry Brewer, account manager at ExCeL London added: "Our relationship with Ford dates back to the very early days of ExCeL, when in 2001 we hosted the ’25 years of Ford and Fiesta Dealer Event’. Since then Ford have been a regular customer of ExCeL, be it for filming and photo shoots or specific events like Driving Skills for Life. We’re extremely happy that they chose us again as their home for Ford Driving Skills For Life, 2016 and we look forward to working with the team again in the future."

In September, Ford and Refinery29 created a glow-in-the-dark garden for New York Fashion Week. Last month, ExCel launched Locked in a RoomEurope's largest escape-game themed venue.
