Fifa in U-turn on World Cup ticket policy

Football's ruling body Fifa has ditched proposals to restrict European fans from buying World Cup tickets without the use of a MasterCard or international bank transfer. Following a campaign by the consumer magazine Which?, fans can now buy tickets through a bank account in their own country using their own currency.

The magazine complained to the European Commission over the deal between Fifa, MasterCard and the German Football League, describing it as discriminatory (Event, April).

Which? principal policy adviser Phil Evans said: "We are pleased that Fifa has responded to the calls of fans for a fair system of payment for their tickets."

Which? will now ask Fifa what it will do for fans that have already paid for bank transfers to buy tickets.
