Excel London has been granted planning permission for the second phase of its development and is now asking organisers to commit business before it secures financial backing for the £150m project.

The London Borough of Newham gave the go-ahead on 14 February for the extension, which will bring the event space up to 100,000sqm.

Excel deputy chief executive and managing director exhibitions, Kevin Murphy, said: “There are windows of construction time due to the Olympics. In order for phase two to be completed in time, we must begin construction this time next year. We now need the industry to make plans.” The venue is also planning a third stage that will include a casino and hotel development.
