Excel looks abroad

Excel has widened its search to outside the UK in order to replace outgoing chief executive Iain Shearer.

Excel has widened its search to outside the UK in order to replace outgoing chief executive Iain Shearer. The venue has been unable to find a suitable candidate for the job in this country. “There has been a huge number of candidates but no one that the board is happy with. The board is determined to make sure the replacement is of a high calibre,” Shearer said. “We are happy to look worldwide,” he confirmed. Shearer was unable to say how long it would take for his successor to be appointed but commented: “Personally, I would like it to be as quick as possible as I have been waiting to step up to the deputy chairman role.” Industry speculation that the venue had set itself a Christmas deadline to appoint a replacement was dismissed. “Until we have found the right person we can’t give a view on timescale,” Shearer said. Excel announced that Shearer was standing down as chief executive at the beginning of July, just seven months after the Docklands venue opened. Recruitment company Spencer Stuart has been given the job of finding a replacement. Excel commercial director Keith Greetham left the venue to form venue development firm, Venue Consultants (Marketing Event, July/August).
