St Paul's Cathedral has closed for the first time in living memory due to protesters camped outside, meaning that events at the venue will not take place for the foreseeable future.

Corporate dinners, receptions and lunches planned at the cathedral’s four event spaces will not take place while it is closed, Event has discovered.

The exception is weddings and baptisms, which may still be held as they are smaller events.

Hundred of activists, said to be inspired by the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York, have been camping around the building since last Saturday (15 October).

St Paul’s dean The Right Reverend Graeme Knowles said this afternoon that due to the fire and health hazards of the protest which is blocking the cathedral’s entrance, "we have no lawful alternative but to close St Paul’s Cathedral until further notice".

Corporate Events manager Alana Buckley informed Event that the cathdral holds about 50 events a year and has 20 booked in before the end of 2011.
