My Event World - Simon Hambley

Simon Hambley is the director of live at London-based agency Crown, however his role is an all-encompassing one that involves sales, client services, project direction and agency management.

In 1992 Hambley teamed up with two colleagues to form events and communications company Acclaim, which was acquired by Crown in 2010. He has worked within the agency ever since.

I got into the event industry because I wanted to work in the music industry when I was 16 but I couldn’t get into a studio so I signed up to a theatre technician BTEC course, which was ground breaking at the time.

I really didn’t have any idea that the corporate event industry existed until I got asked if I wanted to work on a car launch. After that, I migrated from Manchester to an agency in London and that’s when my career in events started in earnest.

I have worked here since 2010

I was attracted to this particular role because they [Crown] bought the company!

Not many people know that my middle name is Xavier.

The best event I’ve been involved in was… That is a really difficult question to answer. When we were young and fearless (or naive) we didn’t really let our inexperience or the client’s budget get in the way of creativity.

We had some great suppliers who thought the same way too, so we really went for it. Those big events in the early days were hard work but very exciting.

If I could do it all over again I would do something different of course. Variety is the spice of life.

The one thing I can’t stand is 'can’t do' attitudes, poor service in all forms, penny pinching, over-zealous health and safety, corporate speak and politics.

Outside of work I spend my time with my kids and my wife mainly. But I do like a new hobby.

If money were no object I would sail around the world; drive the Mille Mille; ski all the time in the winter; do more to help people in real poverty and suffering, and buy my wife a huge diamond.

If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry it would be... I can’t think of anyone. The grass is always greener.

If I ruled the event industry I would ban free pitching.
