My Event World - Claudia Garrod

Claudia Garrod is the event sales manager at Home House, a private members' club in central London. She talks to Event about her start in hospitality, wanderlust and a dislike of lateness.

I got into the event industry because I love a good party. I worked in hospitality to fund my time at university to begin with. It was very much a means to an end but I quickly realised that the hospitality industry was where I wanted to focus when I graduated, namely for its creativity, pace and face-to-face management.

I have worked here since 2010. It is an incredible place to work; it’s a beautiful venue with fun members, which offers the opportunity to work on a wide variety of events.

I was attracted to this particular role because Home House members' parties are legendary. I think when you work in events, your job becomes a lot easier when you love and can trust the backdrop. 

Home House is a beautiful, centuries-old building that has evolved into a real mix of old and new with the addition of House 21 and the Vaults Nightclub. Add to that the character of the club’s members and how well the staff is tuned in to the culture here, and it really is a great place to put on events that people remember.

Not many people know that even though I have been planning events for over seven years, I am still a nervous host when I am planning my own events outside of work.

The best event I’ve been involved in was… Weddings are always my top pick as each one is so individual. We helped a couple with their wedding in Portman Square last year and it was fabulous. We arranged a stunning raj tent, dramatic floral arrangements and gourmet BBQ. They had most glamorous guests and the square looked incredible. Oh, and the weather was perfect too.

If I could do it all over again, I would… I have enjoyed my journey so far and wouldn’t change a thing.

The one thing I can’t stand is waiting. I can be impatient and a stickler for timings, which can drive our floor team crazy.

Outside of work, I spend my time socialising with friends and family and trying the newest restaurants. We really are spoiled for choice in London.  

If money were no object, I would travel more. I am desperate to see more of the world.

If I could switch places with anyone else in the industry, it would be Chris Fitchew, who heads up the production and entertainment for our members' parties. He is incredibly artistic and quirky - a total creative genius; I would love to know what it’s like to be him for the day.

If I ruled the event industry, I would make sure there’s an unlimited budget for every event - in a dream world.
