Event TV: Tesco Mobile prints giant emojis onto English countryside

Telecoms brand Tesco Mobile surprised moody commuters last Wednesday (22 July) by creating two of the world's largest emojis near Bath and Chippenham.

One of the emojis was carved into a field near Chippenham

The two designs, formerly known as smiley faces, were unveiled in a bid to cheer up consumers before work. The brand was inspired by research that showed a smile from a stranger and a stress-free commute is the ‘perfect’ way to start a day.

Located in Bathford near Bath, the first of the activations was painted onto the hills outside the town. A team of 25 artists worked with 700 litres of paint to create the 100-feet wide smiling face.

The second emoji was carved as a crop circle into a field near Chippenham. This meant that morning commuters and those flying out of Bristol Airport could spot the artwork before their days had begun.

The crop circle is expected to last for three weeks and can be seen from up to 10,000 feet in the air.

Tesco Mobile worked with agencies Fanclub PR and XYZ to create the stunt. Cult vlogger Joe Sugg was brought on board to front the campaign.

Simon Groves, chief marketing officer of Tesco Mobile, said: "The popularity of people expressing themselves via emojis has exploded over the last couple of years. We are committed to helping Brits wake up to better, and so, what better way than to create gigantic smiling emojis to make people grin on their commute?

"We wanted to use the traditional awe-inspiring crop circle to give people a morning boost; using a phenomenon that’s centuries old to create something very 2015 for tech-loving Britain."
