The display, supplied by Fantastic Fireworks, was set to music from Liverpool composers. Twelve searchlights were installed at the Pier Head and two four-head Skytrackers sat alongside the city's two cathedrals.
The Syncrolite searchlights and Skytrackers, supplied by PRG Europe, expanded the scale of the event to an area of around four miles.
Lighting designer Paul Cook programmed the lighting display, which took its cue from the music. He said: "The searchlights were very flexible. We were able to use them to floodlight the buildings on the shoreline and at other times scan the sky with narrow bright beams of light."
