From the editor: Liverpool's footballing glory will be a hard act to follow

With Liverpool Football Club trailing 3-0 at half time in the European Cup final last month, few could have predicted that Liverpool Culture Company general manager of events Lee Forde would be adding a victory parade to his already bulging schedule of activity on behalf of the city council. But following what qualifies as the greatest fight-back ever witnessed in international football, a team of heroes got their open-top bus parade while the eyes of Europe fixed a gaze of astonishment on the footballing achievement of the red half of Merseyside.

In 2008, when Liverpool is crowned European Capital of Culture, Europe will witness the city's event management talents. Steven Gerrard and his team had 45-minutes to revive their dreams of European glory. Forde has just over two years to improve upon a packed programme of events to gain European plaudits that would mirror those currently being heaped upon Liverpool FC.

Forde, a proud Liverpudlian, has the experience and expertise to achieve his goal and is already set to transform an events programme that was previously considered successful by the city council simply if nobody was harmed (page 25).

On 6 July, the eyes of the world will be fixed on Singapore, as the International Olympic Committee decides which of the five candidate cities will host the 2012 Olympic Games. London's bid to stage the Olympics has been bolstered by more than two million people who have registered as official London 2012 supporters. Anyone yet to register with a commercial interest in live events should sign up. A winning bid would ensure that the whole of the UK benefits, not only from the regeneration that the Games would deliver, but also from the opportunity to showcase a wealth of event management skills to the rest of the world.

Good luck to London 2012 chairman Lord Coe and as Liverpool proved against AC Milan, anything is possible.
