The Arcola Theatre has appointed engineering and architectural firm Arup, whose projects have included the Sydney Opera House and Beijing's Bird's Nest and Water Cube Olympic stadiums, to work on its new home.

The project will be the UK's first major arts venue to place environmental sustainability at the core of its construction, programme of events and operations, and will incorporate a 350-seat theatre, several event spaces and a public garden, as well as a bar and restaurant.

"This is the first public venue to use a sustainability framework to define the brief and concept, and will set a new level in theatre design," said Neill Woodger, director of Arup's theatre consulting and acoustics business.
