DIARY: The mane attraction ..

Diary suffered another disappointing Grand National last month when its two horses in the office sweepstake fell at the first and last fences. But for people at Aintree it wasn't about the winning - it was about the eating.

Caterer Letheby & Christopher called in 1,800 staff to attend to the needs of the estimated 120,000-strong crowd. Over the course of the three-day event, race-goers chomped through 2,500 hot dogs and 4,500 burgers, while guzzling 4,000 bottles of champagne and 1,300 kegs of beer and lager.

Bet L&C was glad it wasn't taking care of the portaloos.
