Diary: Light fantastic ...

The concept of greyhounds chasing a hare they can't catch finally caught on in athletics when Fast Track, UK Athletics and BBC Sport commissioned supplier Stage Electrics to design a lighting system for the Birmingham Indoor Grand Prix held on 18 February.

Banks of programmed lights enabled athletes to race against world record times for the indoor women's 3000-metre, men's 1500-metre and men's two mile races. Not only did it add to the excitement, but aeroplanes had to be redirected to Birmingham City airport after trying to land at the National Indoor Arena.
