Diary: 'Ere drums ...

It got very noisy in the Tate Modern last month as the Drum Cafe joined forces with children's charity Kids Company to raise awareness of the erosion of childhood in British society.

The Drum It Up For Childhood event in the venue's Turbine Hall ensured any child coming to the museum that day would be turned away by the noise and forced to play outside instead ... Joking aside, though, its real aim was to honour the 1,000 disadvantaged youngsters who created the Shrinking Childhood Exhibition, which closed on 9 March. Replicating an inner city neighbourhood where daily life is dominated by violence and poverty, it attracted nearly 30,000 visitors - and the drums certainly amplified the children's message.
