The Index Group, a new consortium of contractors was unveiled to the industry in July and is bidding for AEO membership. The Barbican Exhibition Centre in London staged the launch and the nine independent contractors created a mini exhibition village comprising 24 shell-scheme stands to showcase their offer. The majority of the group are already individual AEO members. Index is made up of services such as audio visual, supplied by Sirius, staging by Charles Fisher, floral by About Plants, lifting by ILS, registration by DataCo Systems and metal work by Global. The consortium was formed by carpeting and furniture firm Europa International, shell scheme company Hirex and electrical outfit RG Exhibition Services. “The AEO has agreed to look at us for possible membership at the end of this month, despite rules which say new companies have to trade for two years before consideration,” Index Group spokesman Keith Richards said. “We have at least 12 other contractors interested in joining. We are a self-regulating body intent on expansion.” The Index Group refute reports that they have set up to rival key industry players Opex and Melville. “We are about offering more quality choice to organisers and exhibitors. We are all in this business together and an alternative is long overdue,” Richards added. Index Group has an annual turnover of £20m and offices in Birmingham, Manchester and London.
