Core Creative, a former £1.6m turnover division of the venue management and party package agency, will now form Hawthorn’s London base as The Concerto Group focuses on its primary business interests.
The sale follows Concerto’s recent acquisition of the 450-capacity Delfina gallery event space near London Bridge. Late last year, it also acquired venue management agency Event Wise (Event, November/December). The total number of managed event venues in its portfolio in London and the south east now stands at 21.
The Hawthorn inventory of £5m worth of lighting, sound, drapes and staging will now be based across the company’s two UK locations, making Hawthorn a £9m turnover firm employing 87 full-time staff.
Managing director Martin Hawthorn said: “We’ve been looking for some time now for London premises and the opportunity arose. It provides another resource as we continue to grow and grow. An increasing amount of our conference and party work is London-based and now is a great time to build on that success with Core’s experienced full-time staff and equipment based in town.”
The Concerto Group chairman Mike Kershaw said it sold Core Creative because it couldn’t commit to the investment needed to grow the firm in the rapidly changing audio-visual sector. He said: “We will definitely still need a production partner and we have worked with Hawthorns on many large productions over the past few years.”
