I started my placement with WRG back in July, having studied a Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Events Management at Ashdown Academy at the University of London and Kings College. My placement is structured so that I get to spend a few weeks with each of the teams here in London. For the last month I’ve worked with the congress team and helping out client services when needed.

I’m the first student to take up an internship at WRG’s office in London, however they’ve been running student placements in their Manchester office for some time. I feel extremely lucky to be offered this position – especially as there was tough competition from other postgrads for the role.

Our office is located just off Oxford Street, surrounded by other creative agencies, so it’s an amazing, exciting and inspiring place to start my career in events. The team has been great – really friendly and welcoming. When we’re in the office, we’ll have lunch together and a gossip round the kitchen table.

In and out of the office

Agency life is full on, even more fast-paced than I’d imagined when I was studying. I’m getting involved in creative sessions, meeting suppliers and hearing about new innovations in the market – from drones to lead generation apps, as well as hearing from the teams about big brand projects on the go across the globe, with clients like Adidas and Hewlett Packard.

I recently had the opportunity to support one of our pharmaceutical clients at the world’s biggest cardiology congress, ESC at Excel, with 26,000 delegates and 5,000 exhibitors. This involved being on site for seven days supporting our Congress team. In the run-up, I helped source literature, including writing copy, finalising content with our clients, managing artwork sign off and liaising with the printers to get everything ready in time. Working on site at the event has given me valuable experience, as well as a better understanding of how all the pieces of the puzzle fit together.

Next up is my rotation with the production team. I’m really looking forward to getting involved in what they do – we’ve got lots of exciting events in the pipeline. I think it’s going to be great.
