Four years ago London welcomed people from all over the globe to explore everything the city has to offer and join the biggest sporting event in the world. Fast forward to 2016 and it is now Rio’s turn to showcase itself. However, the London story did not stop in 2012. In fact, London’s rich cultural heritage, creativity and dynamism are very much on display here in Rio at the Great British House. 

The official home of all things British at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games, the Great British House in Rio is there to celebrate Team GB’s sporting achievements and everything else that makes the UK and London one of the greatest places to live and work in the world. 

Set in a historic house on the Lagoa and with the iconic Christ the Redeemer watching over us, it is an epic location but the events and activities inside the house are what really brings it to life. The House is buzzing with a stream of international guests sampling the food and drink on offer in the courtyard and by night the House is lit up in all its glory.

All this has been made possible through a joint partnership between the Mayor of London, the UK government and the British Olympic Association. We are working with these partners and some of Britain’s leading brands and ambassadors to collectively deliver a varied programme of commercial, cultural and creative events to a targeted guest list of visitors. 

From niche business breakfasts to musical showcases with the Ministry of Sound, and everything in between, we are centering London as the destination and partner of choice. We’ve had the support of business and City Hall. Rajesh Agrawal, deputy mayor for business, Gordon Innes, CEO of London and Partners and Eileen Burbidge, chair of TechCity UK, the UK’s official envoy for fintech and partner of Passion Capital have all pushed the London brand.

Ultimately we want to encourage and support business that want to make London their home and global platform to other markets.  We want to encourage students, tourists and business visitors to come to London.

So London will continue to deliver out here in Rio. Our competitors are all here doing the same thing.  But the appetite to forge and build relationships with London has surprised me. Our story is strong and people want to hear it. They see London as the global benchmark and they want to learn from us, to understand our own successes and failures so they can deliver and improve their own offers. And in the process, London can also learn and grow.
