Behind the scenes: Rio 2016 heroes return

Creative experience agency Innovision staged a heroes' return in London's Trafalgar Square in recognition of the success of Britain's Paralympic and Olympic athletes at Rio 2016.

The event, which took place on Tuesday (18 October), kicked off at 1pm and saw crowds of more than 25,000 take to Trafalgar Square to show their appreciation for more than 300 ParalympicsGB and Team GB athletes for their record-breaking performances.

The celebration also included a series of live interviews and big-screen footage of athletes’ achievements in Rio, as well as rousing entertainment, including a fanfare introduction from the Queen’s Trumpeters and a headline musical performance from The Vamps.

Innovision was engaged by the Mayor of London’s Office with a short turnaround to lead on the end-to-end event delivery – from all creative programming, show content production and stage design, through to full event planning, production and management, which included multi-stakeholder engagement, health and safety, security and stewarding, crowd and traffic management and licensing and permissions.

The heroes’ return event in Trafalgar Sqare formed part of national celebrations, which commenced with a homecoming parade in Manchester on Monday 17 October.

Team GB won 67 medals at Rio 2016, their biggest haul in 108 years, whilst ParalympicsGB amassed 147 medals and broke 49 Paralympic and 27 World Records on their way. Both came second in their respective medal tables.

Innovision was appointed to lead on the campaign delivery for British House at the Rio 2016 Olympics.
