BECA calls on training body to drop levies

The British Exhibition Contractors Association (BECA) is warning members who provide information requested by the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) that they face being charged backdated levies for sub-contracted labour.

BECA is lobbying to have any reference to exhibition contractors removed from the CITB's remit after it began levying contractors for training for "activities in connection with the erection and dismantling of exhibition stands". Previously it has been up to individuals to prove that they are not classed as 'construction' in the conventional sense to have the levies waived. BECA is applying pressure via political routes.

Early Action Group managing director Steve Barratt said: "This issue will not go away whether you have been given an exemption or not."
