Morris led a joint management and private-equity buyout of the Earls Court exhibition centre in 1999, he sold it in 2004 for £245m and is constantly linked with some of Britain's biggest corporate venues.

Insiders have confirmed to Event the details of an earlier report in The Guardian, which suggested Morris was one of two candidates considered for the role.

Morris is to have a second interview with the Football Association's chairman, Lord David Triesman, and Wembley board member, David Bernstein, in the coming days to confirm his position.

The role is worth £400,000 a year.
