AEO ups audit action

The Association of Exhibition Organisers (AEO) and the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) have joined forces to drive the uptake of auditing at consumer shows.

AEO members first registering a consumer show from now until 30 September, 2001 will get a 25% discount. In a reciprocal agreement ABC members will get 25% off AEO membership.

The deal was negotiated by new AEO chairman Peter Osborne. The Haymarket Exhibitions group managing director has demonstrated his support of the scheme by signing up all Haymarket's UK consumer shows. They include BBC Gardeners' World Live and the BBC Good Food Show.

'The ABC badge is recognised throughout the print media community as a symbol of integrity and as such it is a critical marketing tool,' said Osborne. 'By encouraging more organisers to sign up for ABC audits we can extend the same standards of professionalism across the exhibitions industry.'

Osborne officially took over the AEO chair from Stephen Brooks at the association's AGM on 8 September. About 110 members attended the meeting at the Business Design Centre where the second phase of the industry's generic promotional campaign was unveiled.

Contributions to the generic promotion campaign, the annual awards lunch and increased subscription helped the association almost treble its turnover to pounds 466,501 in the year to December 1999. An operating loss of pounds 14,575 was recorded, which was ahead of budget.
